The Edwards KI-OSHD Intelligent Multi-Criteria Smoke and Heat Detector is an addressable life-safety detector that combines advanced optical smoke sensing with electronic heat detection. It is designed to detect both slow, smoldering fires and faster flaming fires while helping reduce nuisance alarms.
The KI-OSHD uses dual optical wavelengths, multiple detection angles, and onboard digital processing to distinguish actual smoke signatures from common nuisance particles. Its thermal sensor provides both 135°F fixed-temperature detection and 15°F-per-minute rate-of-rise detection.

Multi-Criteria Smoke Detection
The KI-OSHD gathers analog information from multiple optical sensors and converts it into digital signals.
Its dual-wavelength optical system evaluates particles from multiple detection angles. The onboard microprocessor analyzes these readings using digital filtering to distinguish smoke associated with actual fires from particles associated with nuisance sources.
This technology is particularly useful for reducing unwanted alarms caused by general cooking particulates.
Smoke & Heat Detection
The KI-OSHD combines:
Optical Smoke Detection
135°F Fixed-Temperature Heat Detection
15°F/min Rate-of-Rise Heat Detection
Combining smoke and thermal information allows the detector to respond effectively to both smoldering and fast-flaming fire conditions.
Smoke Sensitivity
The published smoke sensitivity range is:
0.5–4.36%/ft obscuration
or
1.6–13.6%/m obscuration
The detector provides:
Five sensitivity settings
Twenty pre-alarm settings
These settings allow compatible control systems to adapt detector response to different applications.
Environmental Compensation
The KI-OSHD provides automatic environmental compensation to help maintain reliable detection as conditions change over time.
Features include:
Two levels of environmental compensation
Two dirty-detector warning levels
These functions help identify contamination and maintenance requirements before detector performance is significantly affected.
Electronic Addressing
The KI-OSHD uses electronic addressing rather than conventional mechanical address switches.
Compatible systems can support up to:
250 intelligent addresses per loop
The detector also supports automatic device mapping to simplify system commissioning and troubleshooting.
Status LED
The KI-OSHD incorporates a bi-color status LED:
Green
Red
The indicator provides local detector status information according to the connected control system.
Compatible Detector Bases
The KI-OSHD supports several compatible base configurations, including:
KI-SB / KI-SB4 — Standard bases
KI-RB / KI-RB4 — Relay bases
KI-IB / KI-IB4 — Isolator bases
Compatible audible bases are also available depending on the system configuration.
