The Edwards GSA-MCRR is an intelligent addressable control reversing relay module designed to control and activate compatible audible detector bases in commercial fire alarm systems. When commanded by the Signature loop controller, the module reverses the polarity of its 24 VDC output, activating connected audible bases.
The GSA-MCRR is the UIO motherboard-mounted version of the polarity reversing relay. It combines electronic addressing, automatic device mapping, onboard microprocessor operation, diagnostic LED indication, and intelligent Signature Series communication in a compact plug-in module. Edwards documentation identifies the GSA-MCRR as the branded equivalent of the SIGA-MCRR hardware.

Polarity Reversal Operation
The primary function of the GSA-MCRR is to reverse the polarity of a 24 VDC circuit supplying compatible audible detector bases.
During normal operation, the output remains in its normal polarity state. When the Signature controller commands the GSA-MCRR to activate, its relay energizes and reverses the output polarity. Compatible audible bases connected to the circuit recognize this polarity change and activate their sounders.
This arrangement allows multiple detector sounder bases to be controlled as a group through one intelligent relay module.
Audible Base Control
The GSA-MCRR is specifically designed to support compatible Edwards audible detector bases, including Signature audible base applications.
A listed 24 VDC power supply provides power for the audible base circuit. The reversing relay controls this power by changing polarity when commanded by the fire alarm system. Edwards typical wiring documentation also shows an end-of-line relay used for power supervision.
This design allows detectors and their associated audible bases to remain integrated into the intelligent fire alarm system while audible operation is controlled according to system programming.
Intelligent Communication
The GSA-MCRR operates as an intelligent Signature Series device and communicates with the compatible loop controller.
The module contains an onboard microprocessor and uses one address on the Signature data circuit. Intelligent communication allows the fire alarm system to supervise the module and command its relay according to programmed system functions.
Automatic Device Mapping
The GSA-MCRR supports Edwards Automatic Device Mapping.
Automatic mapping allows Signature devices to communicate their relative circuit locations to the loop controller. This feature can simplify system commissioning, troubleshooting, device identification, and future system modifications.
Electronic Addressing
The GSA-MCRR uses electronic addressing rather than mechanical rotary switches or DIP switches.
The module requires one device address, which can be assigned through compatible Signature system equipment. This eliminates physical address switches on the module and helps integrate the device with Signature Series mapping and diagnostic functions.
Status Indication
The module incorporates diagnostic LEDs that provide convenient local status indication.
A flashing green LED indicates normal operation, while a flashing red LED indicates that the module is active. These indicators assist technicians during system commissioning, functional testing, inspection, and troubleshooting.
Relay Operation
The GSA-MCRR uses a Form C relay arrangement associated with its polarity reversing function. Edwards documentation lists relay ratings of 2 amps at 24 VDC pilot duty and 0.5 amps at 120 VAC for the control relay family.
The module is factory configured for Personality Code 8, which defines its control relay operating characteristics within the Signature system.
Installation Information
The GSA-MCRR is a plug-in UIO module designed for installation on compatible UIO2R, UIO6R, or UIO6 motherboards. This configuration is particularly useful when several intelligent modules need to be installed together in a fire alarm equipment enclosure.
The module plugs into an available motherboard position and is secured using captive screws. Field wiring connections are made through terminals on the motherboard rather than directly to the module.
Testing & Maintenance
Routine testing should verify communication between the GSA-MCRR and the fire alarm control system as well as proper activation of the connected audible bases.
Testing should confirm polarity reversal, audible base operation, normal and active LED indication, correct device identification, circuit supervision, and restoration to normal operation.
Technicians should also inspect the module, motherboard connections, 24 VDC supply, and associated wiring for loose connections, physical damage, or other conditions that could affect operation.
