The Potter PS-24 Photoelectric Smoke Detector is a conventional smoke detector designed for compatible fire alarm and releasing systems. It uses an infrared LED light source and silicon photodiode to detect smoke particles entering its optical sensing chamber.
The PS-24 features a low-profile design, automatic sensitivity verification, dual bi-color status LEDs, magnetic functional testing, and compatibility with Potter SB Series detector bases. Potter now classifies the PS-24 as an obsolete product and identifies the CPS-24 as its replacement.

Photoelectric Smoke Detection
The PS-24 uses an infrared emitting diode and silicon photodiode inside its smoke chamber.
During normal conditions, the photodiode receives essentially no light from the pulsing infrared source. When smoke enters the chamber, particles scatter light toward the receiving element.
The resulting optical signal is converted into an electronic signal and evaluated by the detector circuitry. When the required alarm criteria are reached, the detector enters the alarm state.
Automatic Sensitivity Verification
The PS-24 incorporates an automatic sensitivity window verification feature.
The detector continuously checks whether its smoke sensitivity remains within its listed operating range. If sensitivity drifts outside that range, the LEDs provide a local maintenance indication.
This helps identify detectors requiring cleaning or servicing.
LED Status Indication
The PS-24 incorporates two bi-color status LEDs.
Normal: Green LEDs flash approximately every 3 seconds
Sensitivity Trouble: Red LEDs flash approximately every 3 seconds
Alarm: Red LEDs remain continuously illuminated
The dual LEDs provide convenient local indication of detector condition.
Magnetic Functional Test
The PS-24 includes a built-in magnetic go/no-go test feature.
This allows technicians to perform a functional detector test without introducing smoke directly into the sensing chamber.
Detector Base Compatibility
The PS-24 is designed for compatible Potter:
SB Series Smoke Detector Bases
The SB Series supports 2-wire and 4-wire configurations as well as applicable relay-base options. Potter also documents the SB Series for use with the PS-24, PS-24H, and IS-24 detector families.
