Wheelock E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC Speaker Strobe

The Wheelock E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC Speaker Strobe is a low-profile audible/visual notification appliance designed for fire alarm voice evacuation systems. It combines a 70 VRMS emergency voice speaker with a 24 VDC 15-candela strobe in a single red, FIRE-marked appliance for indoor life-safety applications. Wheelock’s Series E documentation specifically lists the E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC as a 70 VRMS speaker-strobe model.

The speaker provides field-selectable 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, and 2 watt taps, allowing the audible output and amplifier load to be adjusted for the protected area. The visual section uses a xenon strobe with a fixed 15-candela output and operates from a 24 VDC/FWR notification circuit.

70 VRMS Speaker Operation

The E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC is specifically configured for a 70 VRMS distributed speaker circuit.

Wheelock Series E speakers are available in separate 25 VRMS and 70 VRMS configurations. The E-7070 designation identifies the 70 VRMS version.

The transformer provides five field-selectable power taps:

• 1/8 watt
• 1/4 watt
• 1/2 watt
• 1 watt
• 2 watts

These settings allow installers to adjust individual speaker output while controlling the total load placed on the fire alarm voice amplifier.

Audible Output

Published Series E sound output at 10 feet is:

• 1/8 W: 75 dBA
• 1/4 W: 78 dBA
• 1/2 W: 81 dBA
• 1 W: 84 dBA
• 2 W: 87 dBA

The speaker provides a frequency response of approximately 400–4,000 Hz, supporting reproduction of emergency voice instructions and fire alarm tones.

Actual installed sound levels depend on room acoustics, speaker placement, mounting orientation, ambient noise, and other environmental conditions.

15-Candela Strobe

The E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC incorporates a fixed 15-candela visual strobe.

Wheelock’s Series E ordering table specifically identifies the exact model with a 15 cd strobe. This is important because the E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC is not a field-selectable multi-candela model.

The strobe uses a xenon flashtube and solid-state circuitry to provide visible emergency signaling. Wheelock specifies a minimum flash rate of approximately one flash per second.

Vertical Lens & FIRE Marking

Wheelock’s Series E model suffix identifies the physical configuration of the appliance.

• V – Vertical lens
• F – FIRE lettering
• R – Red plate
• ULC – Underwriters Laboratories of Canada listing designation

The VFR portion of the E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC model therefore identifies the appliance as a vertical-lens, FIRE-marked, red speaker strobe.

Independent Speaker & Strobe Circuits

The speaker and strobe portions operate through separate electrical inputs.

This allows the:

• 70 VRMS audio circuit to carry emergency voice messages and tones
• 24 VDC/FWR visual circuit to operate the strobe
• Speaker circuit to be supervised independently
• Strobe circuit to be supervised using the appropriate fire alarm circuit arrangement

This separate-circuit configuration is typical of voice evacuation speaker strobes because the audio signal and visual notification power perform different functions.

Speaker Line Supervision

The Series E speaker design includes a factory-installed blocking capacitor that supports DC supervision of the speaker circuit.

This allows compatible fire alarm voice equipment to supervise circuit continuity without the supervisory DC interfering with normal audio operation.

The 70 VRMS Series E configuration uses the appropriate speaker-line blocking arrangement documented by Wheelock for supervised life-safety audio circuits.

Wheelock specifies that circuit design should consider average, peak, and inrush current when determining power-supply capacity, fuse requirements, conductor size, and voltage drop.

Indoor Wall or Ceiling Mounting

Wheelock identifies the Series E speaker-strobe family as suitable for indoor wall and ceiling mounting.

The low-profile construction allows the appliance to be installed using compatible electrical backboxes or appropriate surface-mount equipment.

Wheelock also notes that Series E speakers do not fit all Canadian extension rings, so the electrical box and extension-ring arrangement should be verified before installation.

Environmental Specifications

• Operating Temperature: 32°F to 120°F / 0°C to 49°C
• Maximum Relative Humidity: 95% RH
• Environment: Indoor
• Mounting: Wall or Ceiling

The appliance should remain within its listed environmental limits and should not be used as an outdoor notification appliance unless an installation is specifically approved for that application.

ULC Listing

The ULC suffix identifies this model as a Canadian-listed configuration.

Wheelock’s Series E literature identifies ULC as Underwriters Laboratories of Canada and lists the E-7070-LS-24-VFR-ULC among the 70 VRMS ULC speaker-strobe models.

The Series E family documentation references Canadian requirements applicable to speakers and visual signaling appliances, including CAN/ULC-S541 and CAN/ULC-S526.
